“What are the top air purifiers available in India?”
“How does an air purifier work? Should I buy an air purifier?”
If these are the questions in your mind, then continue to read and I will try to answer all these questions.
AIR QUALITY INDEX (AQI)
In September 2014, government of India launched National Air Quality Index (AQI) under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. There are six categories (Good, Satisfactory, Moderately polluted, Poor, Very poor and Severe) for AQI which is calculated based on eight different pollutants in the air.
The National Air Monitoring Program is being operated by Central Pollution Control Boards (CPCB) which provides real time data for continuous monitoring of air pollutants.
This real time data is available on CPCB’s website – http://www.cpcb.gov.in/CAAQM/mapPage/frmindiamap.aspx
Below is the table for AQI category based on pollutants:
|AQI Category (Range)||PM10 (24hr)||PM2.5 (24hr)||NO2 (24hr)||O3 (8hr)||CO (8hr)||SO2 (24hr)||NH3 (24hr)||Pb (24hr)|
|Moderately polluted (101–200)||101–250||61–90||81–180||101–168||2.1–10||81–380||401–800||1.1–2.0|
|Very poor (301–400)||351–430||121–250||281–400||209–748||17–34||801–1600||1200–1800||3.1–3.5|
While the categories “Moderately polluted” and “Poor” may cause some breathing discomfort; categories “Very poor” and “Severe” may cause respiratory illness and serious health impacts even to a healthy person on prolonged exposure.
HOW AIR PURIFIERS WORK?
Home air purifiers usually works using size exclusion method where air is passed through a filter and particles are captured by it. They consist of High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) filter, which can capture more than 99% of 0.3 micrometer particles and is even more effective in case of larger particles.
Other methods include Activated Carbon which absorbs harmful chemicals, UV Germicidal Irradiation where air passes through UV light, Ionizers where electrically charged ions are generated which attaches themselves to air particles and then they are attracted to collector plate and Ozone generators where ozone is generated in some amount which oxidizes many chemicals.
SHOULD I BUY AN AIR PURIFIER?
Yes, go for it. Apart from filtering air with dust, absorbing formaldehyde and PM2.5 particles, they can also be used to save your family from second-hand smoke and from harmful particles of pets.
